UKRAINE LAUNCHES COUNTERATTACK AGAINST RUSSIA

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been stalled for over a week. While Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov maintains that everything is going to plan, the truth is that casualties are heavy and rising and that advances on almost all fronts have effectively ground to a halt.

Failing to make military progress, Russia has resorted to shelling cities in an attempt to break civilian morale. There are suggestions that Russia may resort to chemical weapons or that Belarus may join the attack to regain momentum.

But with the entire invasion force now committed and few reserves to throw in, Russia now appears to be deadlocked and Ukraine is taking the initiative. Rather than wearing the invaders down in Afghan-stye insurgency, President Zelensky seems to be adopting a bolder strategy of attempting a counter-offensive.

This may be possible because rather than advancing across broad fronts, the Russians have used main highways without necessarily securing their rear areas.

This has left them with vulnerable lines of communication that the Ukrainians have already been attacking. Larger-scale maneuvers may be aimed at cutting them off completely and leaving armored formations surrounded and with no supplies of fuel, ammunition or food.

The Pentagon has noted that counter-attacks have been under way for some days.

“We have seen indications that the Ukrainians are going a bit more on the offense now,” Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said at Tuesday’s daily briefing. “We have seen them now in places particularly in the south, near Khersan, they have tried to regain territory. Again we don’t have great fidelity of tactical movements, but we have seen them, make these make these efforts.”

Kirby said that the Ukrainians had been talking about such counterattacks for some time and “I think we have seen indications that they’re that they’re moving in that direction.”

Also yesterday the Armed Forces of Ukraine said on Facebook that Makariv, west of Kyiv, was back under Ukrainian control, and that the “state flag of Ukraine was raised over the city of Makariv.”

But more dramatic events may be unfolding. According to a tweet by the Kyiv Independent, Bucha City Council has stated that the Ukrainian military surround the towns of Bucha, Irpin and Hostomel near Kyiv. (Original Facebook post by Bucha Council here).

This is the area around the airport where Russian helicopters forces staged their unsuccessful assault on the first day of the invasion. The airport has changed hands several times, but this seems to be much larger operation around the entire area: “It means that the Russian troops north-west of Kyiv are now encircled.”

“If true – the biggest defeat of a Russian army until now, and Ukraine needs to start worrying about too many POWs,” notes Berlin-based eastern European expert Sergej Sumlenny.

The claim appears to have been repeated by many others in the area but of course is impossible to verify at this point and may not be acurate. There are also questions over just how surrounded the Russian are.

Rather than actually occupying all the exit routes, it is more likely that the Ukrainians just control them by fire – that is, they are in positions to shoot any anyone attempting to use these routes. This does not mean that Russian forces cannot break out, or that other forces cannot break through the lines and come to their relief.

Even after their losses, the Russians still have a huge advantage in armor, and a degree of air superiority. The outcome of what could be a massed tank battle is impossible to tell. This still looks like a worrying development for the Kremlin though, and even more worrying for other Russian units along the other axes of invasion in positions where they might be encircled.

One month in, the Russian attack appears to have failed and some are suggesting that Ukraine is now in the stronger position. The question is whether Ukraine and Zelensky will settle for a stalemate with Russia — or change it from a draw into something more decisive.

Update March 24th: The Pentagon has confirmed that Ukrainian forces have successfully pushed back Russian forces to 55 km from Kyiv – whereas “yesterday we were telling you they were about 20 to 30 km away.”

The U.K. Ministry of Defence says “There is a realistic possibility that Ukrainian forces are now able to encircle Russian units in Bucha and Irpin.”

Unconfirmed reports put the number of Russian troops trapped in what is being called the “Bucha pocket” at around ten thousand.
