German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Friday that he believed he had been exonerated after testifying for the second time to a parliamentary committee in Hamburg regarding his potential role in a huge tax fraud scheme that cost the government billions.

The committee is probing whether local political figures helped a bank avoid paying back falsely claimed tax rebates.

Scholz was the mayor of Hamburg from 2011 to 2018 and has repeatedly been forced to beat back allegations that he was involved in the decision to let the bank off the hook.

In a closing statement to the press, Scholz asserted that the hearing on Friday had produced a “clear conclusion” and that “There is nothing there. There was no influence.”
